Inventors and Patents From the City of Malibu

The City of Malibu has a rich history of innovation and invention. Many people may not realize this, but there are a number of inventors and patents that have come from this city. Learn about their work, products, and locations. Here are a few notable inventions.


Inventors and patents in the City of Malibu include a number of local residents. One of these innovators, David Morgenstern, is from Palo Alto, Calif. He is an automotive inventor who has filed two patent applications, one on May 1, 2006 and the other on Jan. 9, 2009.

Two Malibu-based companies have been granted patents in the past month. One is called FreeSlate. The company is a co-inventor in a patent for its HER2 antibody composition. It filed its patent application on Feb. 6, 2006.

Another is Micro Therapeutics. The company has a patent for an implant delivery system developed by five co-inventors. It was filed on Aug. 3, 2007. In the past few years, this invention has helped countless people. In fact, this California-based company is now making it easy for other innovators to use the product.

Another company has a patent for a new method of tracking time. This invention involves a technique for adjusting time based on user interface events. The company is responsible for developing the new method. The company has five co-inventors who live in Saratoga, Calif. They have been awarded a patent for their invention.

The company has also been awarded a patent for a laser aligning device for golf clubs. The product is called Kovio. The company’s co-inventors include Benny Chan, Suganda Jutamulia, and Chih Yen Liu. The company filed for a patent on the new device on Oct. 8, 2008.


There are many Californians who have earned patents. For instance, a number of Santa Monica-based companies have earned patents for a variety of products. Microfabrica, a San Diego-based company, has filed a patent application for a communication device with advanced characteristics.

Another successful local startup is NanoScale Surface Systems, which filed a patent for a novel nanotechnology based on the principle of a membrane-based nanoparticle. The company was founded by two Tustin-based researchers, Al Ammar Ali and Walter M. Weber. These individuals have both been involved in developing a novel way to make nanoparticles that can help people in the medical field.

To calculate the average number of patents issued in a particular city, we divide the number of patents awarded in that city every year by the nearest available year of Census data. The calculated number of patents per 10,000 residents is then plotted on the map.

Another local inventor who has been awarded patents is Paulo Kang of Burbank, Calif. He has a number of patents, including the D631,922 patent for the Closure Device. This invention was created in collaboration with eight other inventors. These include Paritosh Desai of Santa Clara, Calif., Richard S. Ginn of San Jose, Calif., and France Savard of Lorraine, Canada. Others include Chi-Yi Kuan of Fremont, Calif. and Fedor Dzegilenko of San Jose, Calif.

Other Californians with patents include Thomas Joseph DeBonis, who invented an induction-heating device for medical imaging. His patent was approved on Nov. 30, 2021. However, it is important to note that patents are not a guarantee of success. According to Dennis Crouch, co-director of the Center for Intellectual Property and Entrepreneurship, roughly 50 percent of patents fail.


In December 2015, the time between filing a patent application and being granted one was 2,527 days in Malibu, Calif. The patent application was for a method of perturbing the contextualization of a proposition for a group of subjects in quantum representation. The idea for this invention was first created in the family garage in 1986. Since then, it has been developed and manufactured. Currently, its products are distributed by renowned brands all over the world. This has resulted in a retail sales of more than $600 million.


There are several ways to recognize the contributions of local inventors. For example, Barry Barish presented a plaque to Hughes Research Laboratories in recognition of operating the world’s first working laser 50 years ago. The city also recognizes the efforts of local businesses.
